Selecting a new product configurator

An information technology department contacted me seeking assistance selecting a new configurator software package.

My response:  before we can talk about the technology, I first need to understand your business and your business requirements as well as the needs of your customers and channel partners.

  • What is the immediate problem that needs to be solved and how can I help the client create a compelling vision for the future that is implementable?
  • Are they looking to create a “me too” solution or a game-changing solution that solidifies their position as a market leader?
  • Do they want to make an incremental improvement or do they have time to make a huge impression on their marketplace?

Getting an appropriate configurator system will ensure a company thrives.

Conversely, selecting the wrong system will take a company to a deep dark place the firm will soon wish they had never entered.

  1. Yes, totally agree. Qualifying questions may include
-Do you need a rules engine (guidance)?
    -Do you need visual configuration?
    -Do you need both?

Also, its very dangerous to start with a small sub-set of products without thinking about how to eventually scale to multiple products. A good configuration platform is scalable so that adding new products or making changes is part of the plan, not an surprise that you didn’t account for.

Agree. The old adage “if you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there” is so true. Dave, you’ve raised a few of the important questions in assessing needs. As we both know, it’s not just about the technology.

  3. Agree. Not sure if you saw my post about “What kind of configurator is best for your products?”

The topic in my post is starting the evaluation by designing the user experience.

Of course, the overall project is much more the just the front-end design and the technology. They key is a fully integrated implementation plan that is driven by strategic business goals and delivered by operational planning.

My company pondered your same thoughts. We are a part of the mass customized (men’s dress shirts) movement and we had to stay in private beta (still are) until everyone was on board with the design of our product configuration process. It’s important for a firm to agree on an ultimate goal; it’s pivotal for a start-up.
